Business Automation Specialists of Minnesota has written a Forecast Import tool for Microsoft Dynamics NAV (formerly Navision). Not only does this tool allow you to forecast components and items that you manufacture, but you can also forecast items that you sell. It enables you to use dependent demand, independent demand or both in your Materials Requirements Planning (MRP). While it is easy to see the effects of independent demand, we all know how challenging it is to capture the ripple effect of dependent demand.
Just to make sure that we are on the same page, NAV calls sales orders and forecasts requirements independent demand because people outside the company create the requirements. This results from the sale or forecast of sales of finished goods and parts to customers. Independent demand creates dependent demand. In other words, dependent demand is the raw materials, parts and components required to manufacture the products required by sales or stocking orders of finished goods and parts.
Our Forecast Import tool allows you to input your forecast by day, week, month, quarter or year. You can also do a forecast by location. You can have different forecasts, e.g. one for Below Target, Target and Above Target; then choose the version you want when planning. The Forecast Import tool tracks the changes made to the forecast and shows you what changes were made as time rolls along.
